Luddlife

The cover of The Long Afternoon, an idler’s guide to doing less, on purpose. A man in a straw hat sits in the grass on a hill at dawn with his mug, eyes closed. A big sun is coming up behind the hill, and a round tree keeps him company.

I made a small book. It’s twelve pages long, which is about as long as a book about doing less should be.

It follows one afternoon, from the first coffee to the light going orange. Each hour holds two of the ten Luddlife ideas, and each idea comes with one small thing to try. None of it is homework. There’s a man on the cover, sitting in the grass with a mug. He’s in no hurry either.

  1. 8 a.m.The first coffee
  2. 11 a.m.The empty hour
  3. 2 p.m.The slow part
  4. 5 p.m.The walk home
  5. 7 p.m.The light goes orange

And at the back, a week of small things to stick on the fridge, and three ideas we learned since.

It’s free. Leave your email and the book turns up in your inbox. After that, a letter from Luddlife now and then, when there’s something worth saying. No schedule. You can leave whenever you like, and I won’t take it personally. Much.
